March 6, 2007 - When I wrote the original Smackdown vs. Raw Wishlist, I had no idea the type of response it would generate. I'm talking triple the response from my Madden Wishlist, and it seemed to strike up some serious emotions, especially concerning the divas.
Some people applauded my call to strike the divas from the game as playable characters, others thought I was completely insane and even insensitive for speaking my mind. But you know what, I'm sticking to my point. I'm all for having the divas in the game as managers or role players in story mode, but if by adding divas to the game that means I don't get ECW or the tag champs or some big new talent that is all over Raw or Smackdown, I say screw them, take them all out and give me those roster spots for guys who don't make me hit the remote when I see them step into the ring.
Anyway, enough of my rants, this is the reader edition of the SVR Wishlist, and I have to hand it to the passionate fans of the game, they really know what they want, and I love some of the creative ideas. Let's hope THQ loves them as well.
So now, onto your wishes for 08…
Vivek has an idea to make finishers more realistic…
Hey there, I read your SVR Wishlist, and surprisingly, it felt like I was expressing my feelings there! 95% of things you mentioned were on my wishlist too for SVR.
But there's just one idea I would like to share. From the very beginning of the game, pulling off finishers have been really easy, meanwhile in real life, it's pretty hard, expect squash matches. The finishers should be really hard to pull off especially playing Legend Mode. Maybe THQ should follow the Burnout Crashbreaker style, meaning you struggle to get the meter to reach full for maximum damage. Same thing for SVR, struggle to reach the meter to peak, to perform it's finisher at it's best. When the superstar is heavy, example, Cena is about to FU Umaga, it is even harder to reach the peak of the meter, so you struggle more just like in real life. This will be a great challenge, example, you have chosen Cena, and your friend chooses Khali, this drives to up more and the match gets more exciting. Get what I mean?
Then I also felt that finishers should stop being cut-scenes. It really slows down the pace and excitement of the match. We should be able to play every bit of the finisher, example, I'm controlling Edge, there's a way to target your opponent, then you choose whether or not to squat at the tunbuckle, then you charge, run, struggle for the meter to rise to it's peak, and BANG! the spear is done! Wouldn't that give us the satisfaction that we pulled off everything and it wasn't just a lame cut scene that just kept our hands off the controller?
Wes takes inspiration from Tekken when looking at SVR…
I have an idea that maybe you could put in your next/updated/reader's version of the wishlist. how about to take a step further from their attempt in chain grappling and the new analog system. Why not link moves better? Kind of like a fighting game with combos but more like in Tekken (a la King). in which certain moves link together easily, and try to complete that combination, and at the same time your opponent does have a chance to reverse each move, and it can turn out to be a really good wrestling match to watch! for example, instead of simply doing an STF (or stfu) you could do a half crab but to turn it into an stf, you have to hit another button or direction + button. Or when doing a jackhammer or a sitout powerbomb or a german suplex, you would have to hold the pin button right after the move in order to complete it as a pinning move - that way you can have it as both a pin or release move. This would also allow a much larger range of move sets, and obviously it depe nds on which basic moves your wrestler actually has (i.e. scoops, powerbombs, suplexes, etc.) Moreover, depending on your wrestler's style, you can only perform certain types.
Also they need specific counters for each person, not just the default grabbing the leg and busting his knee technique. And you should be able to change/choose this for each wrestler. It will be especially fun for the CAWs because you can vary the moves so much that way, and would link well in my version of chain moves I listed above.
I also think there should that weight class shouldn't completely distinguish whether someone can lift your opponent because there are heavier people within weight classes that still qualify for that class but are strong enough to lift someone in a higher class. Like the last game, a cruiserweight couldn't pick up HBK because he is classed as a heavyweight. I'm sure Rey Rey has no problems fireman carrying Shawn Michaels.
Fred has a couple of big ideas he wants to share…
-NO DIVAS?! How about having divas be playable in ALL MATCH TYPES!! For 3 games in a row SvR games have divas being played in limited match types and not in special type matches. I've seen ladies compete in hell-ish matches in Japanese Wrestling, so why not share that tradition in America. Speaking of which, we need blood usage on women competitors. Been done a few times on WWE programming. I know VKM wants more sexy divas to be lessen the action and more of the sexual thing. So, where's the women's rights of wrestling in America? Gone! You can thank Mr. McMahon on THAT part. The game needs to be just like a "what if women fought in a..." style.
-More Create Modes. We've seen Create-A-Wretler...we've even brought back Create-A-PPV (SvR05 had the opening pyro, before SvR06 & 07 took that out...bring the opening pyro back, please!)..but what about Create-A-Move--or Create-An-Arena?? Some of those modes are missing and ppl are demanding them to be in wrestling games. The Create-A-Move (CAM) can let you create a finisher like TNA superstar's Canadian Exploder (flip-over piledriver for those new to TNA)!! And options that would make the mode easy to manage. The Create-An-Arena (CAA) will be like Tony Hawk's Create-A-Skatepark--stage area customized to YOUR needs and you can even make the stage look funky, weird, or just plain obscene--if you know what I mean . Heck, you can even create your own apron design by using the interface what DoR's pain design uses. Apron color and other stuff not mentioned, can be customized like WWE Attitude's version on the N64 & PS1--but more advanced.
Kyle has eight ideas to keep the conversation moving…
I agree with most of your ideas, the one I don't being games made for individual shows. While interesting, I think they would exploit it for money (who wouldn't). They could incorporate your ideas into one game if they finally decided to try and not use the last minute Madden approach.
(1)They should bring back the season mode from raw 2 and refine it. Make it so you can challenge and beat up anyone you want and anyone can do that to you also. The options would have to be in the hundreds to keep things interesting. This could create storylines, as you could plot when and how to attack your enemies and your character's enemies from the show could attack you and berate you in the same ways they do and did on TV I liked how you could have 4 people doing this at once. You could gain a sphere of influence by helping people and eventually take over the fed and be able to do whatever you want. Imagine how crazy it would be to have a 4 way power struggle for dominance within the fed with your friends.
(2) They should remove the 6-player limit and extend it to at least 20. That would make the Royal Rumble far more interesting and 4 way tag matches a possibility.
(3) Like you said, they should focus on the simple matches and throw out stupid gimmick matches like buried alive.
(4) To improve upon that, they should just make every match intensely customizable. It could so deep that you should be able to have a fatal four way Iron Man with the count out limit being 2 and they only way to win is by smashing someone through tables. To help people that aren't as creative they could have archetypes, like the singles, tag team, table, Cage, etc.
(5) Bring in an ungodly amount of customizable options. The ultimate customization of matches would be revolutionary, but they shouldn't slouch in the other create modes like they did last year. I still wonder why my 3 man stable only has the options of entering like: MNM, which has a woman in the entrance (my team doesn't have any women), DX, which also has a woman, and the NWO, which is in black and white.
(6) Bring back the backstage fights. On top of the season mode idea, where you can free roam wherever, you should be able to attack freely. I never got tired of throwing someone off of a 10 story building, I think this sort of unrealism is fun and necessary. They should also implement the ability to actually fight all over the arena through the crowd. No restrictions this time. The penalty could be the quick loss of fatigue while shuffling through all of the fans. If I want to run down to ringside and beat up Michael Cole, it should be within my right to do so. A way of dealing with a 10 man hardcore brawl that doesn't involve a corny cut scene mysteriously teleporting everyone to a certain destination, would be to split the screen like in the Warriors.
(7) Destroy the invisible wall! This could be very hard to accomplish, but if done right it could work perfectly. To diminish the astonishing amount of moves being broken up, they could penalize the interrupting wrestler's special gage. This of course wouldn't apply to pins and submissions.
(8) They should let you completely customize your created players attributes from the start. Playing with a level 38 created guy offers unique challenges, but wears thin after a while.
David checks in with eight ideas of his own…
I enjoyed reading your wishlist for the next WWE game. Some of it I really agreed with, especially making it so these guys aren't beaten by basic moves. There's a couple things I'd like to see, and one thing I have to say I disagree with you on. I'll get that one out of the way first.
1. Yes Divas
I like the divas being in the game. Honestly Mickey James or Victoria are far more interesting characters than Charlie Haas or a lot of the other wrestlers in the game. What annoys me is how they are used.
Basically you can only use them in exhibition or silly bra and panty matches. The thing is that there are female fans of wrestling too, who identify far more with the ladies than the men. So why not just let them play in the career mode Sure, Victoria might never win the WWE title in the show, but neither will I, and I make myself and throw myself into the areer mode all the time. Let the ladies have fun too. Who will it hurt? If you don't want to see them win the title, just don't play as them.
2. I realize that I am the only person on Earth who enjoyed Raw 2 on the Xbox, but you have to admit it did some things right. First off, we have to be able to use our own music for our ring enterances. I am sure someone likes the horrid songs that THQ gives us, but ick. Let us have our own songs.
3. Again like the much maligned Raw 2, gives us freedom in the career mode. Let us set up traps and attack our enemies backstage. Let us choose our own friends and make our own enemies. SDvR games have are just like watching the show, but because of these features in Raw 2, as imperfect as they are, it felt more like actually living a wrestling life. I would gladly give up having the script voiceacted to have more say in what happens.
4. I completely agree with having downloadable characters. Have them make grand debuts in the newly freeform career mode!
5. Since the careen mode would be so open, in order to keep up interesting possibilities in the storyline, have storyline packages be downloadable. I don't care if we even know what's in them. Just insert them in the game and give them a chance to come up if certain conditions are met. Oh, and make these downloads free too.
6. Make an online career mode. Maybe just for he month leading up to the pay-per-views. Let us cut our own promos, calling out the other players.
7. This may be a stretch, but have persistent online leagues. Let us create stables with our friends and go to war with other stables. I can't imagine how fun this could be.
Well, that's all I have. Wrestling is pretty complicated, and I doubt we'll ever see all of our wishes answered. Still, the closer we can get to living the dream, the better the game will be.
Ken is looking to fix specific AI issues within the game…
I'd like to see the targeting icon system overhauled, especially for Elimination Chamber matches. The color arrows that appear over each wrestler's head is impossible to read when the ring has more than four wrestlers in it. Displaying the name of the opponent that is targeting would be much easier.
I'd like to see the ref disappear. In Fight Night Round 3 for the Xbox 360, the ref is absent, and it makes the gameplay easier to get into. In SVR, the ref is a nuisance, and I can't count the number of times I locked up with him, instead of my opponent. Get him out of there!
The Royal Rumble needs to be built from the ground up. It's too easy to get thrown out by surprise, even after eliminating multiple opponents.
The AI gets confused during any match involving multiple wrestlers. Any match involving four or more wrestlers should have some sort of "lock on" feature. It's just to easy for the AI to get distracted and confused when there's so many people running around. I don't know how many times I was beating an enemy senseless on the outside of the ring, and he was still targeting a guy on the inside, so he couldn't counter me.
SVR is a fun game, but a lot of work needs to be done for it to really shine.
Mike is thinking outside the box, and I like it…
Here's a unique mode which admittedly suspends reality but I think it could be pretty cool as well as brutal.
A spotfest mode. Too often I try to set up a leap off the top of the cell onto the announcer's table and I can't do it. Most of the time I end up using 1P vs. 2P with no one playing against me just to set up spots.
My idea: Take the crash mode in Burnout Revenge and apply it to wrestling. Wanna bodyslam RVD through 10 flaming tables off the top of the Elimination Chamber? Do it. Wanna drop Cena off the Titan Tron onto a bed of barbed wire? Do it. The bigger the spot, the more the damage. The more the damage, perhaps prizes could be unlocked. Make it a challenge.
Yes it's unrealistic, yes it's violent, yes it'll probably be controversial, but dammit, it'd be awesome.
Derrick is out for blood…
To add on to some of the ideas for svsR 08, I think they should bring back boiler room brawls and more backstage events. Also, they should allow wrestlers to jump off the smackdown stage hand. My friends and I used to do frog splashes from the hand and win matches. Also, I agree with less divas and less legends. It is nice to play with The Rock, Stone Cold, or Mickie James, but its old news. I want to wrestle with Cryme Tyme, The Spirit Squad, or even The Hardy's (both weren't in 2006). Also, make blood more realistic. When HBK or Ric Flair or even HHH get busted open, they bleed a lot. They bleed to the point where their hair is red. Why can't it be the same in a game?
Justin's biggest demand is to change CAW…
I just read your section on psp.ign.com about improving wrestling 2007 and while I totally agree with the changes that you suggest. I can think of one, redoing create a wrestler mode. When choosing an outfit, I would like to see a large thumbnail type list where you can see 20 or 30 outfits at one time and not have to scroll through 3 at a time. I would like to see an option to make your own face paint. You could take a program like windows paint and put that into the game. I would like to see the option to add text directly onto a wrestlers outfit. I would like to see the option to go from the ring to backstage without loading screens. I would like to see an option to fight directly in the crowd and I would like to see more then 6 wrestlers on the screen at the same time.
Tom wants to talk legends…
I don't have any new ideas for future WWE games, but I do agree with you wholeheartedly on THQ publishing a Legends wrestling game, with the dozens of superstars offered in the terrible Acclaim games. Every year the Smackdown! series removes a few of the legends that are high profile, such as Hawk, Animal and Andre the Giant, to make room for three different Mick Foley's, or three different Hulk Hogans, or Shane McMahon...Shane McMahon?!?! I don't think he even wants to see himself as an unlockable legend. Instead of removing legends from each release, they should be adding to the list, or they should remove them from the game altogether and give them a game all their own. Furthermore, I agree with you on the fact that the current roster should be fully modifiable. It seems that almost every past wrestling game has offered the player the option of altering a wrestler's moves OR their costumes, but very rarely both (RAW 2 on XBOX allowed you to edit costume and moves, but not the actual appearance of the wrestlers). I'm not sure if there is some sort of contractual obligation that disallows them from including a costume editor, but once I purchase the game I should be allowed to put Undertaker in a pink dress (just to show him what's for). Anyway, I haven't watched wrestling since the fall of WCW, so I'm more in favor of seeing a new Legends of Wrestling game than anything else.
Kenneth wants to see first-person wrestling…
I am responding to the question that fans can send Ideas to improve WWE Smackdown 2008.I have an Idea that I think would be a difficult but rather possible and satisfying idea for a WWE Smackdown game. My Idea is 1st person wrestling. I actually sent this Idea to THQ But they told me They couldn't accept un-solicited ideas. This is just a feature that I would love and greatly hope to see sometime in the future since my dream is to become a professional wrestler myself. I would love to have a preview of walking down the ramp into the ring in the Main Event at Wrestlemania. Well that's my idea. I hope they tat least take it into consideration!
Tim speaks for a lot of you who wrote in when it comes to custom soundtracks…
CUSTOM SOUNDTRACKS!! This should be a requirement for all future wrestling games! Nothing sucks more than creating a spot-on version of the Ultimate Warrior, only to have to be forced to use one of the 7 or 8 crappy generic songs in the game for his entrance music! So LAME!

So LAME!
