Ring of Honor returned to Philadelphia last night before what may have been the largest crowd in Philadelphia history (the pre-sale for the event was the largest in Philadelphia, even larger than the December 17, 2005 Final Battle show featuring All Japan talent). This is remarkable given the Bon Jovi stadium show at Philadelphia's Citizens Bank Park last night and being well into the Jersey shore season.
The crowd atmosphere was hot for the vast majority of the show with the "CZW bleachers" holding more than the last time this was done amd the CZW fans taunting Ring of Honor fans with chants like "ROHbots", "sheep", and less printable chants.
Results
Delirious submitted Seth Delay after a Crossface, preceding by a back splash on Delay. Delirious got a great pop coming out and after his win
Prince Nana came out and claimed to have "a huge surprise joining the Embassy". This "huge surprise" was Sal Rinauro, returning to Ring of Honor. This seemed to go over like a fart in church, not so much Rinauro...but that it wasn't exactly a surprise.
Jimmy Rave and Sal Rinauro defeated Colt Cabana and Jay Lethal, following a Sal Rinauro superkick/Jimmy Rave spear combo on Colt Cabana. The toilet paper throwing routine at the beginning of the match was hilarious as the ring was BURIED in toilet paper.
Ring Of HonorPure Champion Nigel McGuiness retained his title, defeating Roderick Strong by countout, a finish booed by a large portion of the crowd, In one of the moments where some in the CZW crowd made themselves look bad, they crapped on the early matwork in the match. (NEWSFLASH: this is wrestling, folks...you know, WRESTLING?) The finish saw McGuinness DDT Strong on the entrance ramp, with the two fighting to get back to the ring. Strong was held back by McGuinness, and McGuinness rolled in the ring to beat the count for the win.
Ring Of HonorCommissioner Jim Cornette came out and trashed Vince McMahon's WWECW claiming that "McMahon and his brain surgeons could screw up a wet dream" to one of the unanimous cheers of the night. Cornette claimed that it proved Ring of Honor is now the only hometown promotion in Philadelphia. (NEWSFLASH #2: Ring of Honor doesn't run Philadelphia monthly. CZW and PWU do run monthly, to name two promotions that do. Ah well, why let facts get in the way of a good promo).
Cornette then started on CZW, saying "everything is going to be settled tonight". He claimed JJ Dillon will be "ROH's Coach" in the Cage of Death match. Cornette said that he wanted Homicide to be the fifth man, but what Homicide wanted would "give him too much power", so chose "American Dragon" Bryan Danielson because Danielson "doesn't need chairs because he can tear tendons and pop elbows".
The Briscoes defeated Irish Airborne. The scary looking spot of the night saw the Briscoes perform stereo duel shooting star presses to the floor on Irish Airborne.
AJ Styles pinned Davey Richards after a Styles Clash. The crowd's flagged a bit in energy here, as intermission wasn't taken until the Cage Of Death was constructed. Even with the air conditioning in the building, the huge crowd pretty much ate up all the AC and it got uncomfortable as hell at points.
Ring Of Honorchampion "American Dragon" Bryan Danielson defeated Sonjay Dutt, via referee's decision after a belly to back suplex followed by the seeming new finish where Danielson hits his opponent with a number of elbow strikes to the face and when they can't stop him, the referee stops the match.
Cage of Death main event
This was done in the manner CZW did Cage of Death in December 2005 with a multi-sided cage on the floor under War Games/The Match Beyond rules. The Cage included two ladders, two tables wrapped in barbed wire, and multiple trash cans inside. In what might be a first, Ring of Honor won the coin toss, giving the babyfaces an advantage in the first time I've ever seen in a War Games match
Samoa Joe and Claudio Castagnoli led off. The crowd was going nuts, as this was the match people had pretty much come to see; followed in succession by BJ Whitmer, Chris Hero, then "American Dragon" Bryan Danielson came in. Then, a swerve, as Dragon called for Joe to hit a muscle buster on Chris Hero. Danielson then cut Joe's knee and jumped him (surprise...they have a Ring of Honor title match next month). Danielson walked out of COD, while Joe was carried out. Some in the crowd were NOT happy about this, as it was pretty obvious that this was done to protect Samoa Joe for tonight's TNA PPV.
Nate Webb was next out for CZW, leaving a 3 on 1 on BJ Whitmer for several minutes. Adam Pearce came in for Ring of Honor and took the fight to CZW, followed by Necro Butcher, in turn followed by Ace Steele hit the ring, using a cowbell (which oddly enough I haven't ever seen a for Ring Of Honorand laid out CZW with a cowbell. CZW continued to beat down Ring Of Honor. Hero trashed the Ring Of Honorfans in the audience, who threw bottles and trash in the ring. Hero then brought out someone who hates Ring Of Honorfans more then he does (and who has been working a long CZW program with Hero...Eddie Kingston. CZW had the advantage over ROH, five on three.
Kingston chopped Hero by mistake, and they went nose-to-nose, until Homicide's music hit and the place went unglued. Homicide broke a piece of wood over Kingston's head, and started to go after Team CZW until Necrobutcher nailed him with a chair. Necrobutcher charged Homicide, but Homicide tossed tacks on the mat, leaving Necrobutcher to run across them barefoot (yeeeowtch...). Homicide tossed forks to Team Ring Of Honor and they bloodied Team CZW.
Steele dove through the ropes but Kingston moved and Steele crashed through a table that was standing upright. Webb took a bump on thumbtacks. Lots of weapon shots. Homicide hit an Ace Crusher through a chair on Hero. Pearce hit a top rope elbow on Webb for a near fall. Hero teased falling through a table wrapped in barbed wire but was knocked past it, into the Cage. Whitmer hit an Exploder on the floor onto a trash can on Kingston.
Hero and Pearce battled to the top of the cage. In scary move of the night, number two.... Claudio Castagnoli jumped from the top turnbuckle to the Cage of Death and hit a side Russian Legsweep off the top through two tables on Adam Pearce. Hero hit a moonsault off of the Cage of Death onto Team ROH. Homicide missed a running senton. Whitmer hit a brainbuster onto a chair on Hero, but Necro hit him with a chair to break up the pinfall. Homicide and Whitmer hit a two man suplex on Necrobutcher, who hit the back of the chair with the back of his head. BJ Whitmer put Necro on his shoulder and dove backwards through the barbed wire table.
Homicide dragged in a barbed wire board in from under the ring. Webb tried to hit him with a chairshot, but was stopped by Homicide, who hit him with a clothesline. Homicide hit the CopKilla (Kudo Driver) on Webb onto the barbed wire board and scored the pin for Team Ring Of Honor.
Post match, Jim Cornette came out and told the Ring Of Honor staff to take out CZW's "garbage wrestlers" and drag out the trash. Cornette then asked JJ Dillon, Adam Pearce, and Homicide to stay at ringside. He thanked Dillon for "leading Ring Of Honor to victory" (Dillon had been booked pre-show as the keeper of the key, then suddently morphed into Coach of Team ROH...not-so-concidentally also doing a book-signing/autograph session pre-show). Cornette then thanked Pearce for being his eyes and ears when he was dealing with knee surgery (that Cornette is finally walking normally after).
Cornette then thanked Homicide for "stepping up" and said he knew Homicide would do what needed to be done for his "home team promotion." Cornette said Homicide was entitled to his three wishes.
The crowd started chanting for Low Ki to be reinstated. Homicide said he wanted a match with Steve Corino in a Ring Of Honor ring. Cornette OKd that. Homicide then said he wanted a Ring Of Honor title shot, and Cornette OKd that. Then the crowd chanted even louder for Low Ki. Homicide then said he wanted Low Ki reinstated.
Cornette said that he "has a problem with that", and claimed Low Ki was the one who (in storyline) knocked his tooth out. Cornette said that Low Ki will never be back as long as Cornette is in power. Homicide said responded that Cornette was a liar because he's not giving him what he wants, then Cornette asked if he was Homicide or "Homocide" because he "wanted his gay lover". Homicide then spit in Cornette's face. Pearce hit Homicide, and Cornette went heel on Cornette, macing him. Dillon and Pearce then handcuffed Homicide to the corner turnbuckle. They maced Julius Smokes as he tried to climb the cage. Cornette began whipping Homicide with a strap to end the show.
The crowd didn't seem to leave happy, as they were clearly expecting a Low Ki run-in for a save, and weren't into yet one more heel turn by an "authority figure"/Commissioner/owner-promoter.
