One of the true stars of the show not to fight at the finale
Although his run on the show did not last too long, few would argue that Jorge Gurgel will long be one of the fighters best identified with The Ultimate Fighter 2. Between his extremely gripping elimination fight and the fact that he was frequently featured in testimonials, Gurgel is one of the true “stars” of the show. That makes the news that he cannot compete in the finale all the more unfortunate.
Speaking to MMAWeekly, Gurgel offered, “Going into the show I completely tore my ACL. I knew I had no stability, but I still believed I could beat everybody in that show with one knee. And I went in with that attitude. I’m a professional, and I was not going to skip on the opportunity to show my skills even though I was very injured.”
The fighter has since undergone surgery to replace his ACL and meniscus. Although he was hopeful about appearing on the live finale, his manager told MMAWeekly.com that he will absolutely not be ready to fight at the show:
“He’s still messed up. He won’t be fighting in the year end show. He can’t straighten his leg yet. He had everything done. It was all gone. There was no ACL. There was no MCL. There was nothing. He had the cadaver surgery and stuff, and he still can’t straighten his leg, so we’re looking at next year sometime.”
