October 12, 2006 - For six consecutive years IGN and THQ have teamed up to bring our readers an ongoing exclusive look at the superstars of the WWE, and this season is no exception. Famous the world over, our "SmackDown Countdown" chronicles each wrestler, diva, and legend that will appear in WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2007, and comes complete with never-before-seen screenshots and direct-feed movies of every last one of them. Every day for the next nine weeks, we'll profile more than 60 different personalities (including two each on Mondays and Fridays as a special homage to Raw and SmackDown fans), and for the first time ever, will cover two different platforms with images and video from both the PlayStation 2 and Xbox 360 versions. Hot stuff? You bet.
But enough with the formalities it's time to throw down with today's Countdown superstar, Gregory Helms!

Gregory Helms has been in the ring a whole lot more recently and he looks very comfortable there. The Cruiserweight Champion remains the longest-reigning Champion in WWE, reasserting his ability in an ongoing rivalry with fellow North Carolinian Matt Hardy.
Hell-bent on proving that he is the greatest Cruiserweight in WWE history, Gregory Helms no longer cares about anyone but himself. Of course, Helms wasn't always filled with angst. Formerly known for fighting for truth, justice and the WWE way, The Hurricane was once a mild mannered reporter who doubled as a sports-entertainment superhero. He devoted several years to fighting for justice on RAW every Monday night, but now, Helms' sole focus is his own prosperity.
Prior to entering WWE, Helms was a star in WCW, where he held the Cruiserweight and Hardcore Championships. As the Hurricane in WWE, he once again held the Cruiserweight Championship, and also teamed with Kane to win the World Tag Team Championship. For a brief time during WrestleMania X8, he also held the WWE Hardcore Championship. On RAW, The Hurricane acquired a protégé in the jovial Rosey, who became his "Super Hero in Training" before ultimately graduating to official crime fighter status. As a dynamic duo, Hurricane & Rosey battled the best of the best in RAW tag team competition, from La Resistance to the Heart Throbs to Cade & Murdoch. Along the way, the duo won the World Tag Team Championship. They held the gold for nearly five months until their loss to Cade & Murdoch at Unforgiven, a loss that was the beginning of the end for The Hurricane.
On the final RAW of 2005, Helms complained about not being on the show and accused Jerry "The King" Lawler of holding him back due to constantly making jokes about his ability. The next week, a challenge was made, and Helms took on Lawler at New Year's Revolution in an attempt to shut "The King" up once and for all. Instead, it was Lawler who emerged victorious. But at the 2006 Royal Rumble, Helms seized his opportunity. Kid Kash placed the Cruiserweight Championship up for grabs against any former champion in a Six-Man Match. Helms entered as the final entrant, winning the match to claim the Cruiserweight Championship. He subsequently moved from RAW to SmackDown to defend his newly won gold.
