July 30, 2008 - If you walk around backstage at a TNA event, you'll see a variety of different styles. Some guys walk around in their gear, like they might be called to the ring at any second to wrestle a match. Some guys are in athletic gear, while others walk around in the t-shirt and jeans you might see them wearing on the street.
Not Booker T, though. When we spoke to him, the former five-time WCW champion and World Heavyweight Champion had on attire befitting his history of gold -- the man was, simply, dressed to the nines, despite the fact that we were in the hazy humidity of Orlando. We asked Booker about his life playing games and whether his wife might be the next one to make an appearance.
IGN: So what are you playing right now?
Booker T: I got a little Tiger 08 going.
IGN: What are your thoughts on it? Good? Not good?
Booker T: It's...difficult. It's different. When you man up, you gotta do different things now, make it a little harder for you, so you can't knock it 400 yards.
IGN: Do you prefer it that way?
Booker T: Nah. I like it this way where you have to actually think about how you do things. I'm a real golfer too, so it fits me.
IGN: How are you in real-life golf? What's your handicap?
Booker T: I'm not bad. I'm at a 14 right now.
IGN: So what else are you into with games?
Booker T: I like Virtua Tennis a lot, that game's really good. Socom...I'm a video game player.
IGN: You're an airplane junkie. Did you have a Game Gear back in the day?
Booker T: Nah. I'm like AJ -- he carries around a full 360 with him, and back in the day, I'd carry around a whole Playstation wherever I went. When you're a video game player, you're diehard, you're a gamer for life.
IGN: What were your favorite games from back then?
Booker T: I've always been a Madden fan, it's the game of the boys, most wrestlers always wanted to be football players and vice versa, so that's how that works out.
IGN: Did you play as the Oilers back in the day?
Booker T: Nah, I was always Dallas. They were America's Team. They were close to Houston, and back in the day, I liked Earl Campbell, but I really didn't like the Oilers and what they did with Warren Moon. It gave me a bitter taste when they brought in Cody Carlson for one year for big money, and then he came in and retired.
IGN: Anything else as a big game from your past?
Booker T: Defender. That's my all-time most fun game to play.
IGN: If you could have one arcade machine in your house, what would it be?
Booker T: It'd be Defender, yeah.
IGN: You've been in a lot of games back to the WCW days. How exciting is to be yourself in a game and see yourself in each new game?
Booker T: It's something to think about coming up, being yourself in videogames, Actually playing yourself is cool, it's when you know you made it. I always wanted to have my own cartoon and...
IGN: We gotta hear about this. What kind of cartoon would it be?
Booker T: No, no, not like a cartoon. Some kinda character.
IGN: Like a superhero?
Booker T: Perhaps.
IGN: What would your superpower be?
Booker T: I'd probably just be a bad brother with theme music, just beating everyone up.
IGN: So kinda like a male Pam Grier?
Booker T: Nah, just for kids. For the kids, yeah. Toned down.
IGN: Does it feel different to be in a TNA game?
Booker T: Pretty much, it's all the same, just games have evolved. They've grown a whole lot more since back then, so now you're doing a lot more things as far as the actual moves and what-not and simulating the real you. It's close to you as you can possibly get; they scanned my face and showed it to me as they did it. It's amazing, what they can do with the technology they have today. It's just cool to just be a part of that kinda stuff.
IGN: Do you think Sharmell would be hyped about being in a videogame?
Booker T: Oh, definitely. She finally got her first doll, her first action figure, so she's pretty happy about that. Definitely, she's into games as well. Something to show our grandkids.
IGN: Do you think people in your family are more excited about you being in a game or having a figure than you are?
Booker T: Definitely. It's cool, but it's not something that I really thrive on or live for. It's really for the fans, not for me, so if I keep doing the work and producing...trust me, it's the biggest compliment one could give me that someone would want to pay money for something featuring me, especially coming from where I came from. Never in a million years did I ever think I'd be an action figure or in a video game, so it's really cool.
