Is TNA Impact the next gen No Mercy? Gamingring has the opportunity to have some hands on time. What did we think about it? Here are all of the details….
This past week I had a chance to sit down and play TNA Impact for about half a hour. This is what I can tell you from what I saw and what I played. If you want to catch the entire interview with Midway while they showed off the game to us be sure to check back at Gamingring.com We will have the video up on the site as soon as we possibly can.
First of all, the first thing you notice is how great the game looks. Without a doubt, the game has improved tremendously since October. And from what I have been told that it is still being tweaked so you can expect the game to look even better. One thing that I also noticed right off was that the load time was not optimized. That is understandable since this was still in development and was running on development software and hardware.
The front end looks very bright and colorful, I made a mental note of the different options available to players from the main selection screen. Exhibition mode, Story mode, Online, TNA Extras from what I have been told will feature matches, and other unlockables + achievements. Create a superstar, And the always mysterious options mode.
We didn’t touch or even have a chance to see the story mode, cas, online, tna extras or the mystical option mode. But I was told that all of this will be available for us to see in Las Vegas for Midways gamer day. Which is next month on April 17th So you may want to check that out.
The exhibition mode is where you and 3 of your good friends can compete in a variety of match types. While I unfortunately did not have the opportunity to browse through the available match types I did catch a glimpse at a interesting previously unmentioned match type, Called Full Metal Mayhem.
Full Metal Mayhem as it was explained to me features a variety of instruments of mass destruction which you are free to use on your helpless opponent. Sounds interesting enough but the one mode that every one is curious about is the 6 sides of steel match. Which will not be in the game this year unfortunately. However he did confirm that the Ultimate X match is in the game and that its very fun to play. Again we have to wait till Midways gamer day in Vegas to play that.
The early build that we played featured 15 TNA Superstars and the final game will ship over 25 wrestlers. The wrestlers that I noticed in the selection screen are. Kurt Angle, Hernandez, Jay Lethal, Shark Boy, Christopher Daniels, Homicide, AJ Style, Tomko, Booker T, Alex Shelly, Chris Sabin, Samoa Joe, Christian Cage, Sting, Jeff Jarrett, Rhino, Abyss, and Eric Young I didn’t catch everyone and I am almost positive I am missing a few but I know for a fact that Shark Boy has been newly added to the game. Unfortunately I have been told that he will not have the sharkboy 247 gimmick.
Another new feature I noticed is that right before the entrances and before Don West and Mike Tenay give their take on the upcoming match. JB Jeremy Borash gives a brief match introduction. One of he most impressive things I noticed is that the games lighting looks excellent on the Xbox 360 version. It really does do a excellent job of capturing the spirit of the Impact Zone in Orlando. The entrances are short but with TNA Impact the focus is on the game play and the actual ring mechanics and that is where Midway focused the most amount of energy to get perfect.
Personally, I hate to throw the term “it plays just like No Mercy” and slap it on this game. It is obvious that Midway was highly influenced and used No Mercy as a launching point for TNA Impact. But make no mistake about it, TNA Impact is a very unique playing game. What really makes TNA Impact stand out among the other wrestling games on the market and the wrestling games released in the past is the reversals. Midway has done a excellent job of keeping the action flowing and really making the gameplay a back and forth experience. Another interesting thing I noticed almost immediately is that the game is extremely easy to pick up and play. With just about 2 minutes of getting accustomed to the controls I was performing moves on my opponent and laying the smackdown upon him.

Just a few more tidbits about Midways TNA Impact.
I have been following the forums since my detailed hands on impressions of the game went online and there is still some confusion about TNA Impact playing like a weird hybrid of No Mercy and Mortal Kombat. For the record, TNA Impact plays absolutely nothing like Mortal Kombat. The only possible connection is that both are published by Midway and there is a run button. So rest assured you wont see Sting throw a fireball or Eric Young through a spear yellng “get over her” and finally there is no fatalities in the game. The closest game I can honestly compare it to would be No Mercy. However, dont let that fool you. A TNA Impact match has a much faster pace than a No Mercy match. And more importantly the action is much more fluid. Moves flow into reversals. Reversals flow into reversals. During the time I spent playing the game I saw reversals that have never been seen in a wrestling game before. Such as a very cool looking attempted backdrop into a DDT.
In the interview we conducted we go indepth about the controls and how everything controls. As I mentioned previously it is very intuitive to pick up quickly. There is a reversal button, a punch button, a kick button, grapple, a run button, there is a strong button when pressed in conjunction with either the kick, punch or grapple you perform a powerfull attack, the left control stick moves the wrestler. The left stick also controls which move or strike you perform when pressed in tandem with the 3 action buttons. the right stick perfoms taunts.
Interesting enough, when the game was being planned there actually was talks of making it a much more over a top experience than what the game ended up being. Visualize the old school arcade WWF Wrestlemania game and you get a idea on what we could have ended up with. Thankfully, cooler heads and hard core wrestling gamers AJ Styles and Samoa Joe prevaled.
Speaking of AJ Styles, AJ Styles now has his current ring gear. When we last saw AJ he was wearing his old ring gear.
I also forgot to mention in my writeup that Petey Williams is in the game as well as Senshi. Christoper Daniels is still in the game despite the fact that he is no longer in the company.
